How to Save Energy this Winter!

Winter in Wisconsin is known for it’s short day light hours and sharp wind chills that make curling up inside all the more appealing!  But what happens when your inside isn’t as energy efficient as you need it to be to brave the blustery days and nights?  Give yourself peace of mind that if you build with Midwest Design Homes your home is built with the Wisconsin Focus on Energy standards in mind!  Midwest Design Homes has all of their custom homes inspected and tested to prove that we are continuing to build homes that will be more efficient, more comfortable and ultimately save you money in heating and cooling costs!

Here’s a few examples of how MDH makes your home more energy efficient!

Although we always use windows rated at and above the requirement for the Focus on Energy qualification, sometimes it isn’t even about the energy efficiency level.  Often times the draft you feel around your glass are actually from gaps in framing that have not been caulked and sealed.  MDH makes sure to seal these spots so your home stays comfortable even when the wind blows!

Another standard in every Focus on Energy Certified new MDH home is R19 Fiberglass Batting insulation in the walls and R50 Blown insulation in the ceiling.  Many other builders will use R38 or R44 as their standards, but because most of your major heat loss escapes through your roof, we think having R50 is a huge asset to saving on your heating bills!

And finally- it is our standard to foam the box sills in all of our homes.  If you aren’t sure what or where a box sill is- go down to your basement and look up!  The area where your floor trusses or I-joists sit on the top of the concrete basement wall is where you will see this pink expanding foam insulation.  The advantages are extra sealing that prevents air leakage, rodents from entering your home and keeps moisture off your floor supports.

Those are just a few of the great benefits to using a builder that is mindful of the Wisconsin Focus on Energy Program and all the little things that go into building a home that will keep your monthly energy usage down!
